Evolving energy codes and low-energy standards like passive house demand greater thermal performance from our building enclosures. To achieve high performance envelope in practice, designers will need to recognize and quantify the impacts of thermal bridging across the entirety of the building enclosure. This presentation will demonstrate a practical approach for incorporating thermal bridging calculations into projects and additional resources for designers to better understand thermal bridging and how to optimize their envelope designs.

Neil specializes in the research and evaluation of the thermal performance of the building envelope and applying that knowledge on new construction projects. Neil has developed numerous performance calculation tools and component modelling data for industry use and has worked with numerous project teams and manufacturers to better understand and mitigate thermal bridging in their designs. This includes the Building Envelope Thermal Bridging Guide, the Guide to Low Thermal Energy Demand in Buildings and numerous other publications and tools. Neil’s research on thermal bridging has been incorporated into numerous low-energy standards and the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals.
